Kevlar® vs Aramid Fibre vs Cordura: What Motorcycle Gear Labels Don't Tell You

Three materials dominate serious motorcycle protective apparel. All three are used in CE-rated riding gear. All three appear on product labels. But they are not the same — and the differences matter when you're sliding down asphalt at speed.

Here's what the labels actually mean.

Aramid Fibre — The Family Name Brands Hide Behind

You’ll see the words “Aramid,” “Aramid Fibre” and even “Aramid Kevlar” used across motorcycle clothing. But those terms don’t necessarily mean you’re getting genuine DuPont™ Kevlar®.

Aramid is a family of synthetic fibres known for high strength, heat resistance, and abrasion performance. It's the category — not the product.

When a brand says their gear contains "aramid fibre" or "aramid lining," they are telling you the fibre type — but not the quality, the manufacturer, the GSM weight, or the percentage used. Some blended protective fabrics incorporate thermoplastic fibres such as nylon or polyester alongside aramid. Under sufficient friction and heat, thermoplastic fibres can soften or melt. The aramid content alone doesn't tell you how the fabric will perform in a real crash.

When comparing gear, don't stop at "aramid." Ask:

  • What aramid — generic or a named fibre like Kevlar®?
  • What percentage of the fabric is aramid vs thermoplastic blend?
  • What GSM (grams per square metre) is the aramid lining?
  • Who manufactures the fibre?

Kevlar® — A Specific Aramid, Not a Generic Term

Kevlar® is a trademarked para-aramid fibre developed and manufactured by DuPont™. It is one type of aramid — but it is not interchangeable with generic aramid fibre, and not every brand using the word "aramid" is using Kevlar®.

Kevlar® is chosen for motorcycle gear because of its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and — critically — because it does not melt. In a slide where friction generates sustained heat, a fibre that holds its integrity is not a minor detail.

At 2WA™, when we say Kevlar®, we mean it. We use 100% genuine DuPont™ Kevlar® fibre at 220 GSM in the Kevlar-lined areas of our protective garments. Not a generic aramid. Not an aramid/nylon blend. Not a vague "aramid fibre" description with no further detail.

Key properties of genuine Kevlar®:

  • Abrasion resistance: Exceptional — rated to withstand sustained road contact at speed
  • Weight: Lightweight relative to protection level
  • Heat resistance: Does not melt — critical in a high-friction slide
  • Flexibility: Soft and comfortable against skin, moves naturally
  • Appearance: Hidden inside the garment — looks like regular denim or fabric from the outside

Cordura — A Different Material for a Different Job

Cordura is a brand of high-tenacity nylon fabric, originally developed for military and outdoor applications. Unlike Kevlar® and aramid fibres — which are used as internal liners — Cordura is used as the outer shell of a garment. It's the layer that takes the first hit against the road.

Cordura is rated by denier (D) — a measure of fibre thickness and density:

  • 500D Cordura: Lighter, more packable, good abrasion resistance — common in jackets and bags
  • 1000D Cordura: Heavier, more rigid, maximum abrasion resistance — used in high-wear zones and technical gear

Key properties:

  • Abrasion resistance: Excellent — the higher the denier, the longer it holds in a slide
  • Weight: Heavier than Kevlar®-lined garments at equivalent protection levels
  • Structure: Holds its shape — suited to jackets, bags, and structured panels
  • Heat resistance: Nylon-based — can soften at extreme temperatures
  • Appearance: Distinctly technical — looks like gear, not streetwear

When to Choose Each Material

Generic Aramid Fibre

If a brand is using quality aramid at sufficient GSM with full transparency about composition, it can perform well. The problem is most brands don't provide that detail. If you can't get a straight answer on fibre manufacturer, GSM, and blend percentage — treat it as unknown protection, not confirmed protection.

Kevlar® (DuPont™)

Choose Kevlar® when you want verified, traceable protection in a garment that looks like regular clothing. Kevlar®-lined joggers, jeans, and pants deliver CE-rated abrasion resistance without the bulk or visual weight of technical gear. It's the right choice for daily riders who want protection they'll actually wear every ride.

Cordura

Choose Cordura when you need a structured outer shell — jackets, bags, and high-abrasion panels where the material takes the first hit. Cordura is built for exactly this role. It's not a substitute for Kevlar® lining; it's a complement to it.

Aramid fibre, Kevlar®, and Cordura are not interchangeable terms. They describe different materials, used in different ways, with different levels of transparency and verifiability.

Before you buy, ask the hard questions: What fibre? What GSM? What percentage? Who makes it? If a brand can't answer those questions clearly, that tells you something important about what's actually in the garment.
